A beginner's guide to AlumierMD

What AlumierMD is known for

I've tried and tested thousands of skincare products, and AlumierMD is still one of the most approachable professional ranges I know. Its routines are grouped by what your skin needs, with plain names: Clarifying for breakouts, Calming for redness, Brightening for uneven tone and Rejuvenating for lines and texture.

It's best known for two things. The first is retinol done gently. The retinol is encapsulated, so it's released slowly, and it comes in steps: 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0, plus IntelliRET 0.3+ for skin that's easily upset. You start low and move up when your skin is ready. The second is its sunscreens: 100% mineral, broad spectrum SPF 30, and comfortable enough to wear every day.

Another favourite of mine is EverActive C&E + Peptide, a 15% vitamin C serum. You mix the crystals into the serum when you open a new bottle, so each one starts fresh.

Who it suits

Most people. If you're new to professional skincare, AlumierMD is a kind place to begin: the textures are comfortable and the steps are easy to follow. Sensitive skin has the Calming products. Oily or breakout-prone skin has the Clarifying range, built around salicylic acid.

It also suits anyone who likes to build a routine slowly, adding one product at a time. I always prefer that to changing everything at once.

Where to start: my four-step routine

Cleanse with SensiCalm Cleanser if your skin is dry or sensitive, or Purifying Gel Cleanser if it's normal to oily. Both are pH-balanced and won't leave skin feeling tight.

Then a serum. Ultimate Boost Serum is my easy first choice: hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and a peptide to help skin look smoother and feel hydrated. If dullness bothers you more, use EverActive C&E + Peptide in the morning instead.

Moisturise with HydraDew if you're on the drier side, or HydraLight for normal to oily skin. In the morning, finish with Sheer Hydration SPF 30 for normal to dry skin, or Clear Shield SPF 30 if you're oily or blemish-prone.

After a month or so, if your skin is happy, add Retinol Resurfacing Serum 0.25 at night. Patch-test first, start two or three evenings a week and build up slowly. Wear SPF every day. Retinol isn't for use while you're pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding.

Tanisha's tipIntroduce one new product every week or two. If your skin reacts, you'll know exactly which one it was.

How it fits with other brands and clinic treatments

AlumierMD plays nicely with others. An AlumierMD cleanser or SPF sits happily alongside serums from another brand. The one rule I'd keep is one retinoid at a time, so don't layer another brand's retinol or retinal over AlumierMD retinol.

It's a lovely range around clinic treatments, too. Gentle Foaming Cleanser, Calm-R and HydraCalm are comfortable on skin that's recovering, and the Prep & Enhance kits are designed to get skin ready before a treatment and help maintain results afterwards. Your practitioner's aftercare always comes first, especially on when to pause retinol and acids.

Your questions

Which AlumierMD retinol should I start with?

If you've never used retinol, Retinol Resurfacing Serum 0.25. If your skin is sensitive or prone to redness, IntelliRET 0.3+. The 0.5 and 1.0 strengths are for skin that's already used to retinol.

Is AlumierMD good for sensitive skin?

Much of it is. The Calming Collection brings together SensiCalm Cleanser, Calm-R, HydraCalm and Clear Shield SPF 30. As with anything new, patch-test first.

Do I need the vitamin C and the retinol?

Not to start. Cleanser, serum, moisturiser and SPF is a complete routine. Add the more active products once your skin is settled.
